Just Got Back From A Job Interview

by Das Brain

So today I had a job interview with an internet marketing start up company. That’s just 1 week and 2 days after I was laid off. Not bad, they were the only ones that responded quickly after I shotgun sprayed my resume out there last week. I’m not sure if there quick response is a good thing or bad thing though. It may mean that they need someone right away or they liked my resume….who knows.

I got to the company early, and stepped into the office. There was no receptionist, just a bunch of desk with monitors on them and computer parts here and there. There was also a bunch of empty rooms. A typical office of an internet start up, I guess. After standing by the door for a minute, one of the founders of the company led me to the boardroom where two co-founders were waiting for me.

In total, I think the interview lasted all but 20 minutes. In my book, that’s usually not a good sign, but then you never know. I have been to another job interview a month ago where it lasted an hour, and the interviewer wanted me to come back and do a product presentation. I prepared countless hours a powerpoint presentation then went back and spent another 30 minutes presenting to the decision makers and tried to convince them to hire me. I have been doing presentations and training for over 5 years and I did not get the job.

Anyway back to today’s interview. The founders of the company seem to like me, I had all the qualifications to perform the job and I made them laugh a bit here and there. I thought I had established a pretty good rapport with them. The only aspect that I think that the founders might not like about me is that I might be a bit too expensive for them or for what they think the job should pay.

I told them what I was making at my last job, and that seemed to have mildly shocked them. I think possibly they were looking for a cheaper employee, but then again who knows. I left the interview confused about what their first impression and total perception of me was. It is completely out of my hands now, the decision is theirs and the only thing I can do is follow up within 2 weeks time, if I do not hear from this startup internet marketing company.

If I don’t get the job…oh well, off to the next interview. That’s the attitude I have to take, keep pressing on.
