Recently Bought Used Apple eMac PowerPC G4 800Mhz Computer with 768MB of RAM Running Mac OS X Tiger

Apple eMac 800Mhz computer Mac OS X TigerTo get rid off Microsoft Windows operating system / platform in my household, I bought a used Apple eMac computer about 5 months ago to get my feet wet in the world of Apple Mac OS X operating system, and to of course not have to
deal with any more viruses, spyware and all that crap associated with Microsoft Windows.

How much did I pay for the Apple eMac?

I paid $150 CAD, got it off a teenager, who’s dad got him a brand new Windows laptop. The listing for this eMac was on Craiglist.com, and I picked it up the same day from the kid who listed it on Craiglist.

The specifications are as follows:

CPU: PowerPC 800Mhz
RAM: 768MB
Operating System: Mac OS Tiger 10.4.11

One of the first things I did was up the RAM on the Apple eMac from 768MB to 1GB. It previous had a 512MB and a 256MB DIMM RAM chip in it. I just basically bought another 512 MB RAM chip ($35 CAD) and replaced the 256MB chip, to make it a total 1GB.

After using it for the last 5 months, I can say that I really like the Apple Mac OS X operating system. It’s very easy to use, not cumbersome like Microsoft Windows XP which I was using forever. The main driver for me to dip my feet into the world of Apple Mac OS X with this purchase of the eMac, was to basically get away from constantly maintaining my previous Windows XP machine (spyware, virus checks and removals).

In the last 5 months, I haven’t spent any time on spyware, virus checks or removals. Imagine how much time I’ve gained back. When my Windows XP PC use to get spyware and viruses that halted my machine (inevitable when MS Windows connected to internet) , it would take hours and sometimes days to figure out how to remove those stupid things, but now with Apple Mac OS X, I haven’t spent one minute in 5 months on stupid spyware and viruses.

When I turn on the Apple eMac, the Mac OS X operating system just works. The main purpose my wife and I use this Apple eMac computer is to surf the internet and watch movies, videos and listen to music. For the those purposes this Apple eMac does just fine surf the internet with no problems using Firefox browser no need to worry about spyware or viruses. Watching DVDs, video files and online video also works with no problems.

For a total of $185 CAD, I think this used Apple eMac computer was worth it for the fact that I don’t have to worry much at all, about the time wasted maintaining spyware and viruses. There are lots of used Apple eMac and iMacs around with faster processors and more RAM, you just have to look out for them…if you want to dip your toes into the world of Apple computers. Keep in mind though that Apple computers go quite fast after they have been listed (high demand).

In the future I think I will stick with Apple Mac OS X based computers for my home and home business use. If I do need to run Microsoft Windows for any reason, I will run Windows within a virtual machine on the Apple Mac computer, even then I would only start the virtual machine when I need it.
