Google Picasa (beta) For Mac OS X – Free Photo Manager

Google Picasa 3 for Mac OS X

The Apple eMac computer at home running Mac OS x Tiger 10.4.11 is one of computer in our household that is used extensively.  We use it to surf the internet (safely), peer to peer downloading, watch DVDs and online movies as well as listen to music.

Recently, my wife wanted print some pictures for the purpose of creating a scrap book.  So, she used the eMac computer to find, view and print pictures, however I noticed while she was doing this process that we really need a photo managing software program for our Mac OS Tiger.  She was having a hard time double clicking on a photo / picture file viewing them and manually copying over to the USB storage key.
I started researching what photo management programs for Mac would be ideal for our use, and realized that there was not many FREE photo management software programs for Mac OS X.

Below is the software titles I found for photo management on Mac
- Acdsee Pro for Mac  (Beta)
- iPhoto
- Picasa for Mac  (Beta)
- Mapivi (opensource)
- Kavasoft Shoebox

A few things to take note of.  Both Acdsee Pro and Picasa for Mac OS X,  right now are in beta form.  Which means that there may be some serious bugs that may affect the usage of these software  programs.  In regards to Mapivi, this will work on Mac OS X, however it is opensource and installation of this program on a Mac might not be easy, as it requires additional components like Perl, and TK libraries.  Even though, I am technical enough to install the required components I rather not give myself the headache.

I’ve tried Kavasoft Shoebox photo management software on Mac OS X Tiger at a friends house before and it did a pretty good job
of managing photos by year and month.  I found it did intuitive  however it is not free either, and my friend could not find the CD it came on anyway.

iPhoto from my research, haven’t had good praise from people who have used the photo management software from Apple.  Many users, say it is too basic, not enough features and lack certain sorting functionalities.  These unsatisfied users, have turned to using the beta version of Picasa for now, and are really pleased with it.  Of course they will be upgrading to the stable release once it
is available from Google.

As for my own eMac computer, I think I will also be installing the beta version of Google’s Picasa photo manager software as I do not currently own Apple’s iPhoto, Kavasoft Shoebox or Acdsee Pro (both commercial license).

Google’s Picasa for Mac  might have some bugs, but it’s FREE, and I’m sure that those bugs will not be complete show stoppers.
Once the stable version is release I will simply upgrade or re-install…no bigga deal. :)

Picasa for Mac is available for Mac computers running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.9 and higher.

If you have any additional feedback or comments on any of the photo management software for Mac OS X that I have mentioned above, please feel free to make a comment.  It will be much appreciated.
