The Cove Bar & Grill Restaurant, Newmarket, Ontario, Canada

by Das Brain

On Thursday, I was cooking and my wife called and told me that she was invited to go to a restaurant and experience the restaurant on the owner’s tab. The owner was one of the parents of the kids that my wife looked after at the day care. So, even though I was in the middle of cooking I stopped what I was doing and we went to check out the restaurant.

The restaurant was the called “The Cove Bar & Grill” and it was located at Davis Drive and Huron Heights. For those familiar with Newmaket, Ontario you probably know this restaurant already. It’s where most of the locals go to watch sports events and to play snooker and hang around the bar, it has a good friendly atmosphere and the staff was very nice.

My wife and I have never been to “The Cove Bar & Grill” and didn’t know what to expect from the menu. The menu had quite a good selection of appetizers, soups, salads and entrees like clam chowder, jalapeno poppers, ceasar salad, burgers and fish and chips. Pretty much what you’ll find at most bar & grill type restaurants.

We decided to have the jalapeno poppers, and clam chowder for appetizer and they were great. My wife decided to have a dish called “The Cove” which was a seafood platter with deep fried scallops, shrimps and halibut with fries and salad. She said it was tasty and filling, she really enjoyed it. She also tried a Corona style beer called “Brahma”, she really liked it. I tried her Brahma and would have to say that I like it better than Corona, it had a sweeter taste and went down easier with less bitterness. If you never heard of Brahma check it out.

I had a sandwich called “The Big Tom”, named after the cook, and boy was it a big sandwich. It was basically, a deep fried fillet of halibut on a bun with tomatoes and cole slaw. Interesting, never had anything like it but it tasted great along with the fries.

My wife and I have tried fish & chips at other venues around Newmarket, Ontario but found that “The Cove Bar & Grill” had the best tasting deep fried fillets. What we liked was that the batter was not very thick, it was a light batter which made the fish inside taste better. Not like some other places which have thick batter that require a lot of chewing and took away the taste of the halibut. The locals say that “The Cove Bar & Grill” has the best fish and chips in town. I agree.

Anyway, this was a short plug and thumbs up for “The Cove Bar & Grill”, so if you ever find yourself in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada which is 45km north of Toronto for any reason and need a good reasonably priced meal check out the The Cove Bar and Grill at
