Year 2007 as the title of this post suggest was an extremely volatile year for me. At the beginning of 2007 I watched on CNN a gentleman from Hong Kong, talking about the Chinese pig or boar zodiac, and calendar prediction for 2007. The man said that usually years ending with the number 7 are very volatile, and he also mentioned that 2007 has metal, fire and water elements associated with it. Well, when you mix hot metal and water you get a lot of sizzle and volatility and that is exactly what I got for 2007.

I’m not usually superstitious, and I didn’t think anything of CNN news reel about the predictions for 2007. Until, a series of events slowly unfolded themselves as the year 2007 progressed. Below is a list of events that transpired for year that just passed.

I lost my job at the beginning of the year.

Started trading stocks and options full-time

Volatile year for stock market, subprime mess brings down stock market and year ends without Santa Claus rally

I started working on my web business full-time in addition to trading

Trading has been tough, psychologically

Lots of financial worry

Family problems

It was not just a volatile year for me though. I had friends that had also lost their jobs, and friends that had deaths in their family as well in 2007.

Trading stocks and options will end the year in the positive, meaning that when I close the books for 2007, I made money. Off the top of my head probably around $10,000 CAD for the last 8 months of trading. Good results, most people lose all capital and stop trading entirely in the first year. It wasn’t easy though, very tough psychologically and the learning curve was steep. I will be posting the official results in early January.

My web business will be profitable in 2007, the total revenue generated from Google adsense was around $1300 CAD, and I was able to cancel off a lot of non-revenue generating domain names.

As you can see, total earnings for 2007 is not enough to replace my previous earnings of $65,000 per year salary. So the financial stress level has risen in 2007 substantially. It has been a long while since I had financial stress of this level.

On the bright side of things, I did learn an awful lot about trading as a profession. Aspects such as economics, interest rates (liquidity cycle), jobless rate and manufacturing numbers and how that affects the stock market. I’ve learned a lot about technical analysis, chart analysis and how to spot or scan for profitable trading opportunities.

Another bright spot is that I learned what it takes to make websites generate revenue, and I can look forward to building out more of the over 150 keyword rich domain names that I own.

Needless to say that 2007 was not that great for me, and I am very glad that it is over. Looking forward to a better year in 2008.
