Epson Stylus CX5000 Color Multifunction Printer Review

by Das Brain

I purchased an Epson Stylus CX5000 color multifunction printer a while back, because I didn’t have a printer and I needed one that can print high quality photo pictures, scan and photocopy.  I chose the Epson Stylus because Epson’s are known for their ability to print high quality photo pictures. Apparently a lot of professional photographers use Epson photo printers, I know our wedding photographer did, he had one of those Epson printers that cost around $900 and he highly recommended the brand.

Epson has this special type of ink they call DURABrite. I noticed when printing photo pictures the DURABrite special pigment ink delivers really brilliant and detailed pictures. According to Epson it is long-lasting on plain and photo paper and because the ink is instant drying and smudge resistant, it’s great for double-sided document printing. However, replacement ink cartridges or refills are not cheap. The ink cartridges generally run about $23 for black and $16 for colors and you need 4 ink cartridges which is black, cyan, magenta and yellow. I have found a webstore called that sells them for $6.95 USD for Epson compatible ink cartridges, which is cheaper after shipping than buying it locally here in Toronto, Canada.

So getting back to the review of the Epson Stylus CX5000 Color Multifunction Printer, the printing speed is pretty standard at 27 ppm (page per minute) and the quality for photo pictures are great. You can also plug in your USB storage key or digital camera directly to the Epson Stylus CX5000 to print directly from those devices without having to start the computer, it’s a pretty neat feature. To save color ink or when you do not require color or high quality printing you can select to print in draft mode or text mode. This is good for when you just want to be able to read something without much need for good quality pictures.

The photocopying feature I like a lot. Super easy to use, and the Epson Stylus CX5000 has a lot of buttons on the left panel that you press to do photocopies. One button is for color photocopies and the other for black and white photocopies and a STOP button to stop the printing. If you want a larger document to fit onto the paper you have loaded there is also a FIT TO PAGE button this one comes in handy as well. Now of course sometimes you would want to print more than one page and for this there is a button and LED number display so you can choose how many pages you want to photocopy.

The scanner on the Epson Stylus CX5000 is also pretty easy to use. You simply put the document you want to scan on the photocopy / scanner glass and then start the Epson software. The cool part is that the scan can be fully configurable before you even start scanning. What I mean by configurable is that you can use the Epson software to use choose the exact quality of the scan via the dots per inch setting (DPI). The higher the quality you want then the higher the DPI you choose, but remember the higher the DPI the larger the file size. I’ve had some pictures scan at 800 DPI which ended up to be like 300MB, and it took like 5 minutes. From the few pages that I have scanned I have to say that the quality was decent, but to get great scans you will have to set it to a much higher DPI like 960 or above, but then it will take a while to scan, it will take over 10 minutes.

After using it for a while, I really like the Epson Stylus CX5000, its features are great and the quality of the photo printing is awesome. This multifunction printer more than does the job for me and I use most of its features quite often and have had no problems with it.
