Signs of Slowdown: Tech’s Week of Weakness

Saturday, July 28th, 2012

I am glad Bloomberg is recognizing that the tech earnings hasn’t been that great. I’ve been noticing this and trying to figure out the disconnect between what is going on with the NASDAQ. The majority of tech reporting bad earnings but the NASDAQ is still at lofty levels of 2900…there is a big disconnect here.

Google Nexus 7 inch Jelly Bean Android 4.1 Tablet Selling Very Well

Friday, July 27th, 2012

Google Nexus 7 tablet
When Google announces their Nexus 7 tablet, and I read over the specifications I knew that Google had a winner.
Google was able to get the price and specifications to a level where it is balanced and consumers will be getting a very decent product for their money.

Just look at the ARM processor alone, a Quad-core Tegra 3 processor and also it’s communications capability with
WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth. Hands down this beats both the Kindle and Blackberry Playbook (worst of bunch).

Shorted AMD with PUT option/LEAPS 15% return
I recently closed off a few AMD PUT option contracts/LEAPS. These were AMD PUTS for January 2014 at a strike price of $4.00. I purchased these when AMD’s share was trading around $6.75 (contract price was $0.53) and sold the contracts when AMD’s share price hit $4.26 (contract price was $0.91). See above MetaStock chart.

UPS Cuts Full-Year Forecast on Slowing Economy

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

The transports are always a good indicator of where the economy may be heading, and the fact the UPS (United Parcel Service) has cut their forecast and is possibly laying off people is not a good indicator.

This usually means that companies/business and people worldwide are buying less which reflects in less goods being shipped. All a sign of a slowing economy.

IMF: China’s Economy is Bottoming Out

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

6 quarters (1.5 years) of slowdown, so the IMF think it is bottoming (this view is too optimistic). I think there is more slowdown to go. One thing to remember is that when Europe’s and America’s economy slows, China manufacturing will slow, which means Chinese citizens losing their jobs.

If unemployment in China gets worse, then people spend less over there as well, affecting their domestic GDP. Now, we can how see high unemployment has affected the U.S economy, it may have the same effect in China.

Apple Shares Plunge as IPhone-Lull Hits Earnings

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

Earnings did not meet expectations and iPhone 4S did not sell as well as Apple fanboys wait for iPhone 5. Shares are off about 5%.

Also, the global economy is slowing and it is a possibility that people are generally spending less.

Quants: The Alchemists of Wall Street (Marije Meerman, VPRO Backlight 2010)

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

Here is a great documentary on Quants. Those genius mathematicians that come up with financial products to be sold to investors. Some of the formulas they come up with are so complicated that the people that sell them don’t understand them.

The investors do not understand the consequences of these financial products as well. Well, heck even the Quants do not know the true extent of the consequences if these products react to unforeseen circumstances. Some of these products were responsible for causing the 2008 crash due to complicated credit default swaps and mortgage backed securities.

Monday, July 16th, 2012

Less people paying into Social Security, but there is also a lot of people who are now using social security. If this doesn’t change the shortfall will be much greater.

In the end the government will have to raise taxes.

Spain protest turn violent
First the miners were protesting out in the country area of Spain, then they took the protest into the main city. When that happened everyone else (Spanish citizens) decided to join the protest in the city. Things are not looking good for Spain, it may be the next to collapse much like Greece.
